With the intensification of global population aging, the maintenance of cognitive function and muscle strength has become a hot topic in public health. Pyrroloquinoline Quinone disodium salt (PQQ), as an emerging nutrient, has attracted much attention due to its potential in enhancing cognitive function, strengthening muscle strength, and improving physiological processes.
Cognitive function is key to the quality of daily life. Studies have shown that PQQ can improve various cognitive domains, including memory, attention, and executive functions. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving adults aged 20 to 65, participants who supplemented with 20 mg of PQQ daily for 12 weeks showed significant improvements in composite memory and verbal memory. Particularly among young adults (20-40 years old), PQQ significantly enhanced cognitive flexibility, processing speed, and executive speed after 8 weeks, while older adults (41-65 years old) showed improvements in complex and verbal memory after 12 weeks. These findings suggest that PQQ may offer different benefits to people of varying age groups.
In addition to its effects on cognitive function, the impact of PQQ on muscle strength and physical function is also supported by scientific research. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, healthy Japanese adult volunteers who supplemented with 21.5 mg of PQQ disodium salt daily for 12 weeks showed significant improvements in lower limb extension muscle strength and grip strength. Furthermore, the PQQ supplementation group also demonstrated significant enhancements in physical function as measured by the 10-meter shuttle walk test, 6-minute walk test, and 10-meter walk test. These results further confirm the potential of PQQ in maintaining and improving muscle strength and physical function.
The safety of PQQ has been assessed by the European Food Safety Authority. Clinical trials have also confirmed the high safety of PQQ, with no adverse reactions observed even when taking 100 mg of PQQ daily for 24 consecutive weeks. Based on these studies, PQQ, as a high-purity functional food, cannot be ignored in its potential to improve brain function, slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, and enhance muscle mass and strength.
As a multifunctional nutrient, the role of PQQ in enhancing cognitive function, strengthening muscle strength, and improving physiological processes has been scientifically validated. As research deepens, PQQ is expected to become an important auxiliary means in preventing cognitive decline and muscle atrophy, which is significant for promoting healthy aging and improving the quality of life. Future studies will further explore the mechanisms of action and therapeutic potential of PQQ, providing more scientific evidence for its use in clinical applications and daily life.
