Citicoline is a neuroprotective compound that is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and other neuronal membrane components, acting as an intermediate in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine.

In ischemic stroke, several studies suggest that administration of citicoline, in addition to routine medical management of acute stroke, may improve brain function and reduce post-stroke cognitive decline, particularly producing better attention result.

Long-term administration of citicoline is safe and appears to promote neurogenesis and neurorepair, especially in older patients with less severe stroke who have not been treated with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator.
