γ-Glutamylcysteine (γ-GC) is a dipeptide formed by the condensation of glutamic acid and cysteine. Inside the cell it combines with glycine under the catalysis of glutathione synthetase (GSS) to produce glutathione (GSH), making γ-GC the immediate precursor of GSH. By being converted to GSH, γ-glutamylcysteine helps scavenge oxygen free radicals, detoxify reactive oxygen species, modulate enzyme activity, take part in metabolism, and strengthen immunity.
