New Horizons in Sports Supplements: The Advantages of ATP
When people talk about sports supplements, protein powder and creatine usually come to mind first; adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is rarely mentioned. Yet ATP is the "energy currency" of human cells, the core fuel for muscle contraction and nerve transmission.
As research progresses, the impact of oral ATP supplementation on exercise is emerging, offering athletes and fitness enthusiasts a fresh nutritional strategy.
Safeguarding Sustained Performance
During exercise, repeated muscle contractions rapidly deplete ATP. If ATP cannot be replenished in time, fatigue arrives early.
Early studies tested enteric-coated ATP supplements, but these formulations failed to withstand intestinal pH and did not raise blood ATP levels effectively. Later work showed that non-enteric-coated ATP disodium salt is far more useful.
Although it does not elevate resting ATP concentrations, it “stabilizes” blood ATP and its metabolites after high-intensity effort, preventing an energy-supply cliff and safeguarding sustained performance.

Increased Power and Delayed Fatigue
ATP supplementation improves performance primarily by boosting power and delaying fatigue. During resistance training, regular ATP intake allows athletes to complete greater training volumes; over time this promotes gains in muscle size and strength, making every session more productive.
Even a single dose can acutely improve lower-body resistance-exercise performance, enabling the body to consume more oxygen and release more energy.
In repeated-sprint sports the benefits are even clearer:
ATP maintains peak power in late-stage sprints, prevents performance drops caused by energy shortage, and preserves muscle excitability so that fibers continue to function well after multiple high-intensity contractions.

Cardiovascular Protection
Beyond performance, ATP contributes to recovery and cardiovascular health. Overtraining can erode strength and power, but ATP supplementation attenuates these losses, accelerates recovery, and reduces muscle-protein breakdown, thereby "escorting" muscle repair.
For athletes concerned with cardiovascular health—especially hypertensive individuals—ATP modulates post-exercise heart-rate variability, helps the heart return to a steady state more quickly, and can even lower systolic blood pressure, adding an extra layer of protection after exercise.
Although the precise mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated, ATP has already demonstrated potential as a safe supplement that supports both performance and post-exercise health. As research advances, it may become an indispensable ally for ever-wider athletic populations.
