Synergistic Effects of Citicoline and Plant Extracts
Cardiovascular health is tightly linked to the lipid profile and redox state, while lifestyle choices strongly modulate the response to any intervention. A novel dietary supplement that combines citicoline, vitamin C, and standardized extracts of green tea and Aronia melanocarpa (chokeberry) has recently been tested in healthy adults, providing new reference data for the rational use of natural products.
Multi-component synergy delivers a dual mechanism of action
The formula’s advantage lies in complementary, mutually reinforcing pathways. Citicoline donates choline for phospholipid turnover, indirectly improving the cellular lipid micro-environment. Green-tea catechins accelerate LDL-receptor–mediated clearance. Aronia anthocyanins down-regulate key lipogenic enzymes. Rose-hip-derived vitamin C quenches free radicals and lowers oxidative stress. Together the ingredients achieve both lipid-lowering and antioxidant protection.

Clinically measurable benefits
In a 6-month, single-arm study of 43 healthy volunteers aged 40–65 years, the supplement produced consistent improvements: total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), and the atherogenic ratios TC/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C all declined, implying reduced cardiovascular risk. The lipid-peroxidation marker malondialdehyde (MDA) also fell, indicating attenuated oxidative damage.
Lifestyle strongly influenced the magnitude of benefit. Smoking was the main negative determinant: non-smokers improved across all parameters, whereas smokers showed no change. Alcohol intake did not blunt the lipid-lowering effect but did weaken the antioxidant response. Even overweight and sedentary participants derived measurable benefits, offering an additional intervention option for these hard-to-treat groups.
Conclusion
This new dietary supplement can beneficially modulate the lipid profile and redox status of healthy adults, but maximal efficacy requires adoption of healthy lifestyle practices—especially smoking cessation. Larger trials in patient populations are warranted to validate its therapeutic potential.
