According to statistics, approximately 8.5 million people worldwide die from hypertension every year, with causes including stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. Scientific research shows that NAD+ levels decline as we age, and cardiovascular disease is also associated with age.
Researchers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in China pointed out in a paper published in the journal "Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy" that NMN can significantly reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension aged 18 to 80 years old. This human clinical trial found that patients with hypertension have lower NAD+ levels, and NMN can increase their NAD+ levels by approximately 43%. Additionally, patients with hypertension have higher levels of the NAD+-consuming enzyme CD38 in their vascular endothelial cells, explaining why they experience lower NAD+ levels.
The data showed that patients with hypertension had significantly lower NAD+ levels in their blood compared with healthy adults. Supplementing NMN while changing lifestyle can significantly increase NAD+ levels in patients with hypertension.
This study is the first to reveal the key role of NAD+ in regulating elevated blood pressure and maintaining vascular homeostasis; the first to report that activation of CD38 in hypertension leads to NAD+ depletion; and to elucidate the interaction between macrophages and endothelial cells to activate inflammatory signaling cascades to promote high expression of CD38. Molecular mechanism; confirms that increasing NAD+ levels is a new strategy for treating hypertension.
