The role of glutathione in alcohol metabolism

 

Glutathione (GSH) is a bioactive substance widely present in normal cells of the human body. It helps to protect cells, scavenge free radicals, inhibit inflammatory factors, relieve hangover and protect the liver.

Glutathione is produced in human cells, with the highest concentration in the liver. Glutathione is like the "flower protector" of the liver, helping the liver to process toxins and wastes, and enhance the liver's immunity and repair functions.

In alcohol metabolism, glutathione mainly works through the following two pathways:

1. When drinking alcohol, the body metabolizes alcohol into acetaldehyde, then into acetic acid, and finally into carbon dioxide and water. However, excessive drinking can lead to the accumulation of large amounts of acetaldehyde, which can cause damage to the liver and other organs.

Glutathione and alcohol dehydrogenase work together to reduce NADPH to NADP+. This process is similar to a "regenerative" cycle, which can continuously consume acetaldehyde, thereby accelerating the process of metabolizing acetaldehyde and reducing damage to the liver.

2. When drinking alcohol, the body will produce free radicals and a large number of hydrogen ions. These substances can cause severe oxidative damage and toxic effects on cells.

Glutathione is like a "shield" that protects the body from these harmful substances. It has a certain antioxidant capacity and can remove these harmful substances and reduce damage to the liver.
