S‑Acetyl‑L‑Glutathione: A Precursor of Glutathione

by: Weber Liu Time: 2026-10-28 Classify: Product News

The fast pace of modern life, external environmental factors and irregular routines can cause fluctuations in the body’s internal redox state. Reduced glutathione (GSH) is an important endogenous tripeptide synthesized by the human body, which participates in regulating the body’s redox balance. However, direct glutathione supplementation has limitations. As a structurally modified glutathione precursor, S‑acetyl‑L‑glutathione (SAG) has attracted growing attention in scientific research.

The Potential of SAG
Carrying an acetyl group on its molecule, SAG can resist hydrolysis by certain enzymes, exhibiting superior plasma stability and better bioavailability for absorption by the body. After entering cells, it is hydrolyzed by intracellular thioesterases to produce glutathione and exert corresponding biological effects. Existing research literature indicates that studies on SAG cover multiple fields including nutritional health care and skin maintenance, making it a promising research substance.

Differences from NAC
Other common glutathione precursors available on the market include N‑acetylcysteine (NAC) and glutathione esters. The three differ in their conversion pathways and research outcomes. NAC relies on multiple enzymes in the body to synthesize glutathione; conversion efficiency may decline if the activity of relevant enzymes is insufficient, and studies have reported potential risks associated with metabolite accumulation. In contrast, SAG is converted via intracellular thioesterases. No adverse events have been reported in relevant studies to date, and available trial data support a more favorable safety profile.

Advantages of SAG
According to current research, investigations into SAG extend beyond physiological mechanisms, with relevant studies in dietary supplementation, skin care and pet nutrition. The human body’s capacity for endogenous glutathione synthesis declines with age. In vitro assays and small‑scale human studies suggest that SAG helps raise intracellular glutathione levels. In skin research, glutathione acts on tyrosinase and participates in the regulation of melanin metabolism. Animal trials involving pets have also shown that supplementation with SAG increases glutathione levels in red blood cells of test animals.
