Many people believe that high blood cholesterol is a cause of heart disease.
But in fact, vascular inflammation is also one of the main culprits of heart disease.
The inflammatory response to blood vessel damage occurs in four steps.
The first step is to invade endothelial cells.
Oxidized LDL cholesterol, homocysteine, and large amounts of free radicals can cause oxidative stress and damage endothelial cells.
The second step is the inflammatory response.
When the vascular endothelium is damaged, the body sends white blood cells (mainly monocytes) to try to destroy the oxidized LDL cholesterol.

But monocytes will stagnate when encountering bad cholesterol, and will soon be filled with oxidized LDL cholesterol and become lipid cells.
Lipid cells attach to the walls of arteries and cause the first signs of atherosclerosis, known as lipid streaks.
The third step is the chronic inflammatory response.
Not only does inflammation attract more monocytes, the monocytes themselves become stuffed with oxidized LDL cholesterol.
The lipid plaque becomes thicker as a result, and arteriosclerosis begins.
The fourth step is plaque cracking.
About 50% of heart attacks are caused by a rupture of one of these plaques and the formation of clots around the plaque.
