How to supplement glutathione

 

Glutathione is both one of the second phase detoxifying compounds and an antioxidant. It is used by the liver to detoxify formaldehyde, acetaminophen, specific mycotoxins, benzopyrene, and many other compounds. Glutathione helps maintain the redox potential of cells, which means it helps keep antioxidants loaded and ready to prevent inflammatory responses. Glutathione acts as an antioxidant and is involved in protecting proteins, synthesizing nucleic acids, and repairing DNA.

Glutathione is made up of three amino acids – cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid. Many genes are involved in the synthesis of glutathione and its precursors. The glutathione-conjugated pathway was shown to be efficient in the clearance of ochratoxin and afamycin.

How to supplement glutathione?

The most important food sources of glutathione are cruciferous vegetables and broccoli sprouts, which need to be chewed repeatedly to release the enzyme.

Rosemary and garlic are also excellent foods to replenish the GST gene/enzyme (glutathione transferase), which converts glutathione from an antioxidant to a detoxifier.

Supplements that replenish glutathione levels include: lipoic acid, artichoke, curcumin, folic acid, magnesium, silymarin (milk thistle), selenium, and vitamin B6.

If there are significant GCLC, GCLM or GSS variants, acetyl glutathione or liposomal glutathione may be used.

Support for Nrf2 is needed because many glutathione-related genes require Nrf2 as a cofactor.
