In 2023, a paper from Nanjing Medical University published in Stem Cell Rev Rep showed that NMN-pretreated mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (N-EVs) have the potential for therapeutic intervention in acute myocardial infarction.
Causes of myocardial infarction include atherosclerosis, thrombosis, coronary artery spasm, and other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and obesity that increase the risk of myocardial infarction.
Previous studies have shown that N-EVs are rich in miR-210-3p, which can effectively improve myocardial infarction by promoting angiogenesis and inhibiting apoptosis.
In this study, researchers used NMN-pretreated mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (N-EVs) to conduct experiments to observe the physiological conditions of diseased rats.
Experimental results show that NMN-pretreated N-EVs can reduce ventricular remodeling after myocardial infarction and improve cardiac function more than untreated N-EVs, and also reduce apoptosis and cardiac fibrosis in the peri-infarct area.
N-EVs also promote angiogenesis, which is critical in ischemic myocardium, as increased angiogenesis improves regional blood supply after myocardial infarction.
