NMN and heart health

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), as a coenzyme involved in many important biochemical reactions in our body, plays a vital role in maintaining the normal work of mitochondria. An important mechanism causing cardiac aging and related diseases is precisely "mitochondrial dysfunction." Mitochondria are not only the main source of cardiac energy (ATP) but also a key regulator of cardiomyocyte survival. Since the ATP reserve of the heart itself is very limited, mitochondria need to be strong and uninterrupted to provide ATP to maintain the function of the heart, otherwise it may lead to disease states such as heart failure.

Since NAD+ levels in the heart are so important, is increasing NAD+ levels useful? Multiple studies have shown that the use of the NAD+ precursor NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) can improve cardiac NAD+ homeostasis and alleviate age-related cardiac pathological and physiological changes. Moreover, clinical trials on NMN have shown encouraging results, confirming its safety and efficacy.

In 2014, a study by the New Jersey Medical School found that intraperitoneal injection of NMN in mice significantly increased the level of NAD+ in the heart and prevented the reduction of NAD+ during ischemia, thus protecting the heart from ischemia/reperfusion injury.

The reduction in the activity of NAD+ and its mediated Sirtuins will have a negative impact on mitochondrial function, and impairment of cardiac mitochondrial function is the key to the pathogenesis of heart disease.

In 2020, a study from the University of Washington in the United States tested the effects of two different mitochondria-targeting drugs, SS-31 (a synthetic tetrapeptide) and NMN, and found that SS-31 partially reversed the age-related decline in diastolic function. NMN completely reversed age-related cardiac contractile function defects. The synergistic effect of the two can better rejuvenate the aging heart.

Various factors such as coronary atherosclerosis, cardiometabolic abnormalities, and myocardial ischemia may lead to cardiac fibrosis, which in turn may lead to abnormal heart stiffness and ultimately lead to heart failure.

Supplementing NMN also has a good protective effect on blood vessels, which can reduce cardiovascular disease, improve heart disease and vascular dysfunction. Taking NMN can delay the decline in the number and function of endothelial cells and improve the symptoms caused by aging by restoring the activity of Sirt1 in blood vessels. Endothelial dysfunction and large elastic arteriosclerosis.

A large number of studies have confirmed that supplementing NMN has a very good protective effect on heart disease and vascular sensitivity. NMN can comprehensively and effectively revive the cardiovascular system and play a great role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
