NMN is expected to protect retinal function in many aspects

In previous studies, the anti-aging ingredient NMN (beta Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) can not only prevent a variety of age-related metabolic diseases (including obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, etc.), but has also been shown to improve retinal mitochondrial function. Prevent retinal disease, damage, detachment, etc.

Research published in the "International Journal of Molecular Sciences" by a research team at Keio University in Japan shows that NMN can help prevent retinal dysfunction caused by carotid artery occlusion.

Researchers surgically performed unilateral common carotid artery occlusion (UCCAO) in adult mice and observed retinal dysfunction 7 days later. However, daily intraperitoneal injection of NMN (500 mg/kg) into mice after unilateral common carotid artery occlusion significantly reduced retinal dysfunction.

Furthermore, the researchers also found that retinal glial cells were activated and overproliferated in mice that underwent carotid artery occlusion surgery. Activated glial cells can repair damage to the nervous system, but excessive proliferation can form scars and prevent nervous system tissue from regenerating in the injured area.

After NMN treatment, the pathological proliferation of glial cells in mice was reduced, and the expression levels of Ccl2 and Ccl12 related to neuroinflammation were reduced. It shows that continuous use of NMN can reduce retinal glial cell proliferation and improve inflammation.

When further exploring the principles behind NMN's retinal protection mechanism, the researchers found that ischemia induced by carotid artery occlusion significantly reduced NAD+ levels in the mouse retina, while continuous daily use of NMN helped maintain NAD+ levels in the retina. inhibit its decrease.

NMN also increased the expression of the antioxidant factor Nrf2 in ischemic retina, indicating that NMN helps regulate redox balance and antioxidant pathways.

Cardiovascular dysfunction (carotid artery occlusion) leads to retinal ischemia, which in turn induces retinal dysfunction, retinal neuronal gliosis, and increases oxidative stress. Continued use of NMN can improve these problems. Combined with the multiple improvement effects of NMN on eye function found in previous studies, it shows that long-term supplementation of NMN is expected to protect retinal function in many aspects and prevent retina-related diseases.
