Integral detoxification of glutathione

The sulfhydryl group on glutathione cysteine is its active group, so glutathione is often abbreviated as (G-SH), and it is easy to react with heavy metals such as iodoacetic acid, mustard gas (a poisonous gas), lead, mercury, arsenic, etc. Combined with salt or carcinogens, etc., and promote their excretion from the body, to neutralize and detoxify.

It can participate in enzyme-free conjugation with some chemical substances. For example, G-SH is conjugated to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI) to detoxify it. When acetaminophen (acetaminophen) is taken in such an overdose that GSH is depleted, active cytochrome P450s—active metabolites formed from paracetamol (known as acetaminophen in the US)—become toxic, At this time, glutathione is an important antidote for drug overdose.

Glutathione (GSH) is involved in the synthesis of leukotrienes and acts as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase. As an important hydrophilic molecule, GSH is added to lipophilic metabolites and metabolites via hepatic biotransformation before they become part of bile. Glutathione is also necessary for the detoxification of methanediol, a metabolic by-product. This detoxification reaction is carried out by the glyoxalase system. Glyoxal type I enzymes (EC 4.4.1.5) catalyze the conversion of methylglyoxal and reduced glutathione to S-D-propionyl glutathione. Glutathione type II enzyme (EC3.1.2.6) catalyzes the hydrolysis of S-D-propionyl glutathione to glutathione and D-lactic acid.

Studies have proved that glutathione can improve the symptoms of toxic hepatitis and infectious hepatitis; it has detoxification effects on poisoning such as acrylonitrile, fluoride, carbon monoxide, organic solvents, and heavy metals.
